NEW FIRE STATION

The Yankton Volunteer Fire Department proudly serves the city of Yankton, South Dakota and surrounding area, including Lewis & Clark Lake, a reservoir on the Missouri River.  Our staff includes a full-time fire chief and deputy fire chief in addition to forty volunteer firefighters.

Station One is located near historic downtown and just four blocks from the river.  This station features a six-bay apparatus floor that houses two city engines, one city ladder truck, one rural engine, two rural tankers, a brush attack truck, and a county-owned HazMat / Rescue truck.  Station Two is in the center of Yankton, housing our administrative offices along with one city engine, one rural tanker, and several specialty units.  We also have a two-bay station at the municipal airport.  A fourth station is located approximately five miles west of Yankton near the entrance to Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, and houses one rural tanker, a special response truck, and an ATV brush attack unit.

Fire prevention and education is an important aspect of our business.  Our fire safety trailer teaches hundreds of children each year how to crawl low under smoke and find an escape.  We also give demonstrations and bring equipment to kindergarten through third grade classes in Yankton every  October during fire prevention week.  Our annual open house gives the entire community an opportunity to visit our station and get a glimpse of what we do.

After years of planning and nearly one full year of construction, Yankton Fire Station #2 is completed!  The new station is located at 201 W. 23rd Street, and is now where our offices are located, along with a large training room, kitchen, dining, and a four-bay apparatus floor.  A public open house is being planned for this spring.  You can see pictures of our newest facility on the "Pictures" page.
